Dr. Ronald Dworkin’s new book, “Artificial Happiness: The Dark Side of the New Happy Class” talks about antidepressants and the numbing down of America. He notes that we have been sold a bill of goods that we have a right to be happy and we should be happy and if we are not happy, an antidepressant may be just the pill to take.
Each person reacts in his or her own way to particular life stressors. Depending upon the person’s individual make up, they may respond by suppressing unpleasant or unacceptable feelings. Some people have a tendency to always look on the sunny side; others have a learned or inherited tendency to a sad and disheartened mood.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), notes “Depression” is a term applied to a group of symptoms and a person diagnosed with depression may have many different presentations of symptoms.
In the latest edition of Homeopathy Today, T.R. Dooley, M.D., presented his findings in “Shedding Light on the Dark Side of the Mood.” He calls it “Help for depression: A real alternative to conventional antidepressants.” Homeopathy does not work by forcing a change in brain biochemistry as conventional medication attempts to do. Instead, homeopathy works by prompting a response in the body’s self-healing mechanism, and the brain biochemistry changes naturally as a process of becoming healthier.
Dr. Dooley seems to echo Dr. Dworkin, saying, “ The huge glut of prescriptions for antidepressant medications in our society reflects a deeper problem relating to our cultural values and social institutions.”
Find out what else Dr. Dooley has to say in my next post.

Been wearing glasses for near sightedness since age 8 (or the past 50 years)! For the past seven years, my eyes had been improving and my prescription would become too strong after about a year. I converted to glasses so that contact lenses would not restrict improving tissue. Last year, the optometrist noted, “Your eyes are not the appropriate size to be categorized ‘near sighted.’” In March 2007, again my prescription needed to be lessened because my eyes had improved. During testing, the technician remarked, “Your eyes are crystal clear! Do you wear sunglasses?” “No,” I answered. She said usually she sees fuzzyness around the lens, indicating glaucoma or cataracts. I told her I use homeopathy and good nutrition. I am so glad I started homeopathy to improve my overall health. Healthy eyes and good eyesight are so precious.
Exploring Healthy Options - Are You Malnourishing Yourself?

Smell your food and chew, chew, chew. So important. Ever do the dashboard diner or meals on wheels? So many times we shovel in the food, chomp, chomp, swallow, run, then wonder why we feel so yucky.
You can easily do so much to improve your digestion. Consider that the time and money to purchase an antacid could be put to much better use just to chew your food. Poor digestion results in the body mind not getting the nutrients and hormones needed to support a healthy life. Are you malnourishing yourself?
Sniffing your food activates brain chemistry. The sight, taste, smell, or thought of food triggers parasympathetic reflexes and gastric juice is secreted in healthy response. Ever walk by a restaurant and smell the aroma wafting out the door and find your mouth filling with saliva? Your body is wise to start the juices and get ready for first morsel. Saliva is the early digestive juice to prepare food for stomach processing.
Chewing breaks down the food. Consider chewing as a great opportunity to savor all aspects of the food. Mastication prepares food and gives stomach, pancreas and gall bladder time to squirt digestive acid and juices into stomach and prep for good processing of food to make chyme. Adequate stomach acid is very important in this processing.
Heartburn can occur from too much acid in the stomach, and also from too little, as maldigestion and fermentation produce organic acids that have the same symptoms of burning and discomfort.
U.S. News & World Report recently featured information from the Journal of the American Medical Association(JAMA) about the overuse of antibiotics “then dosing ourselves with Pepcid and Prilosec that may prevent severe heartburn, or reflux, by lowering the acidity of the stomach gastric juices.” “Most sore throats are caused by viruses, which don’t respond to antibiotics, so the majority of the children [and adults] wouldn’t have been helped.”
The wisdom of the body operating as it should uses stomach acid to keep the upper part of the digestive tract free of unhealthy bacteria. By using drugs to reduce the acidity, the body’s natural barrier is compromised. In addition, the digestive acid is not in the stomach to process the food. Are you compromising your health?
Consider homeopathy for acute and chronic indigestion, with a large number of potential remedies. Use of plant-based digestive enzymes, and acidophilus may aid digestion until the system is stronger. Potent strains of acidophilus and probiotic cultures are also helpful to the intestinal tract for reducing inflammation and recolonizing the intestinal walls for healthy processing of nutrients.
Homeopathy seeks to ameliorate symptoms by focusing on the source of the imbalance causing them. Consider homeopathy as a vitalizing, detoxifying and regenerative approach to wellness. Homeopathy complements other health and medical care.

Anxiety, Fears & Phobias
By Janet Shultz
NaturWell Center – Homeopathy & Nutrition
With both Friday, the Thirteenth, Halloween, and the advancement of the Holiday season, October was a busy month for troublesome fears and phobias to surface. Some fears belong in our lives, such as ones that serve to protect our families and ourselves from life’s dangers. Others may develop as a result of a traumatic happening whereby there is a self-survival reaction to keep you aware and out of future danger. However, when a situation is wrongly perceived and a fear subsequently dominates one’s life, getting professional help may be a good idea.
Having said this, reminds me of a trip to New Hampshire where a fellow was in the woods and chased by a bear. He was visibly shaken and told the story many times. When asked if he wanted to let go of this and relax, he declined. He was clearly enjoying secondary gains to feeding this fear.
Fears come in many forms. Holidays bring fears of upcoming relative visits and uncomfortable family dynamics. Holiday shopping may bring fears of crowds and enclosed places. There are also fears of the looming end of the year deadlines. Think of “stage fright” or performance anxiety. Fear of germs and getting sick may be basis for anxiety and questionable behaviors. Even fall and winter storms cause some people, as well as pets, to experience fears of lightening and thunder.
Fears are real for those who have them and are nothing to be made fun of. There are different treatments for “getting rid” of fears. One is the “overwhelm” treatment where the person is subjected to system overload and essentially can no longer hold on to the fear. Prescription drugs may be the choice for some people especially if the are having fears of leaving the house and heights.
Homeopathy offers another alternative to releasing anxiety and becoming more open to flexible and resourceful behaviors. It is one of the most gentle, safe (non-toxic), and effective methods of encouraging mental, emotional, and physical health. In essence, Homeopathy works by stimulating your vital energy, encouraging your body to let go of unhealthy energy, and supporting the whole person to improve health and wellness. Very effective and empowering. Some of the many homeopathics that benefit release of fears and anxiety are listed below with symptoms that provide insight into the distinctive and subtle differences of the remedies.
Aconite - acute, panicky fear and anguished restlessness; fear death, darkness, crowds, or some unknown impending evil; mentally hyper alert.
Argentum nit - fears being late, closed spaces, heights, having a fit or dying, robbers; always hurried
Belladonna - fears animals, imaginary things; delirious, confused and less aware of surroundings; likely to be violent and destructive.
Gelsemium - anticipation anxiety and fear of losing control, public appearances, exams; feels paralyzed.
Phosphorus - fear darkness, death, being alone, illness, robbers, storms, ghosts or monsters.
Stramonium - fears dark, evil, water, dogs, mirrors, closed places, people, new things; night terrors in children; twitches & spasms.
For 200 years, homeopathics have been used alone or as a complement to conventional medicine. Regulated by the FDA, homeopathic remedies are highly individual; there are over 3,000 varieties and 12 usual potencies, making at least 36,000 possibilities. There are no side effects, it’s low priced, and the best part is that with homeopathy, when you are improving one malady, you are actually improving the whole person. To quell your fears this holiday season consider homeopathy and consult with a homeopath to find the right remedy for you.
